It’s frustrating, because this movie could have gotten the PG-13 rating and appealed to a larger audience if it weren’t for all the F-bombs. There are (seriously no exaggeration) about 60 F-bombs in this movie, including one use of motherf****r, all said by kids. I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about the profanity in this movie, as it’s definitely the biggest issue here. Now, I have said that gore isn’t a huge issue in this film, but language is. Maybe it’s because I went in with my scare factor expectations too high, I don’t know, but seriously, I’ve seen several PG-13 horror movies that I thought were scarier than this. Yes, it is pretty scary in some parts, but it’s definitely not terrifying.

The other thing I’m confused about is that Common Sense and a large number of people are saying that this movie is terrifying. Pennywise also gives kids hallucinations with lots of blood, but it’s not real blood, again it’s just hallucinations. One of the other main gory scenes is where a character puts a switchblade in his dad’s neck, and lots of blood is shown pouring out, but there’s no graphic injury detail. A girl’s father is abusive but nothing graphic is shown. There’s another violent but not gory scene where Pennywise gives the same kid he waved to an hallucination of when his parents burnt alive in a fire, but they’re behind a door, and only their hands are visible. And the other gory part is where we see Pennywise covered in blood waving to a kid using a severed arm (not the other child’s arm) and that’s pretty much it. This scene isn’t overly graphic but is shocking and a bit disturbing. We don’t actually see Pennywise bite this kid’s arm off, we just see his teeth touch his arm, then the scene cuts for a moment, and then it cuts back to it with the kid armless and bleeding a lot, with blood in the water because it’s raining, while he is trying to get away. I know this sounds crazy, but there are actually only a few gory parts in it, mainly the scene where Pennywise bites a child’s arm off, which is arguably one of the most infamous scenes in modern horror cinema. I went in expecting it to be, but it actually wasn’t. I don’t know why people are saying this is super graphic and gory. I am a mature 14 year old but the average 14 year old should be fine with it as well. Now that I’ve finally seen it, I can totally see why Common Sense put this at 15+ it’s definitely fine for a 15 year old, unless they are sensitive, and I would even say it’s fine for a 14 year old. Before I watched this movie, I saw Common Sense Media’s age rating at 15+ and I was like how is this appropriate for a 15 year old? This is rated R, I had heard of this being graphic and terrifying, I had heard of the scene where Pennywise bites a child’s arm off, I had seen the gruesome and disturbing animatronic props based off the movie, and IMDB has both “Violence and Gore” and “Profanity” listed at “Severe” for it as well. “It” first came out when I was 9, and obviously it (lol no pun intended) was too much back then, but now that I’m 14 I finally watched it and it was pretty good. So if your kid or you are a kid can withstand gore, mature and doesn’t care for lots of cursing they should be able to handle it. The f word is said a total of 60 times! (dont ask how i know i just do). One other thing I want to mention is there is a lot of swearing. I’m really excited to watch IT chapter two!! I loved this movie and hopefully you do too.

Sometimes with the music in the scenes I could kind of tell Pennywise would mess one of the kids minds. If I’m being honest Ben is really annoying, I just don’t like him. Im really surprised that I wasn’t scared by the opening scene where Georgie dies, and in the bathroom scene with Bev. I’m honestly mad I didn’t watch this sooner, its such a good movie. It honestly should be fine if your kid isn’t sensitive to blood as there are scenes with lots of it. One problem people may have is that they might not be that mature to watch it, the movie in itself isn’t really scary to me, and I know lots of kids, even 16+ said it was. It has strong themes of friendship and trust.
